Here is a list of related links that I found valuable for both the preservation of our great region and offer interesting pieces of information. Some of these sites are even friends of Sierra Life! Don't forget to say "Hello!"
Nevada's Historical Markers
Beginning in late 2007, I decided to break from my world of photography to seek out and catalogue all of Nevada's 271 State Historic Markers. Why? Check it out for yourself! * As of January 2012, this website will be celebrating it's 5 year anniversary since it's debut! Since then, Nevada-Landmarks has placed #1 in Google, and #3 on major search engines for Nevada Historical Markers! My website has become the end-all resource for historic markers in the State of Nevada. Many, many thanks for choosing me AND your dedication to preserving Nevada's heritage.
Forgotten Nevada
Ever heard Ramsey? Seven Troughs? Pine Grove? How about National, Pamlico, Bolivia, La Plata or Eberhardt? If these names don't ring a bell you're not alone. In fact, don't be surprised if you've never heard of these ghost towns. There's a perfectly explanation for that: it's probably because there's little left to find out! These and hundreds of other old mining camps are slowly disappearing due to the sad sands of time. Fortunately, two guys, Bob and Luis, have gone out of their way to access, photograph, document and wonderfully record such lost places before it's too late. This website is a A MUST SEE if you are a true ghost towner, or lover of history. Tell them I said "hi!"
Nevada Magazine
Our great state of Nevada has her own magazine! Produced bi-monthly, this editorial covers the entire state from corner to corner. This photographer's favorite segments are "Tour Around Nevada" and "Wide Open." Access the May/June 2010 issue and read my article - "Silver State Symphonies in Elko County."
LET 'EM RUN
The LET 'EM RUN FOUNDATION is a nonprofit group based in Virginia City. In partnership with state and federal governments, local businesses and community, LET EM RUN is committed to the protection and preservation of Nevada's wild horses and the heritage of the American West. If you are a proud Nevadan, you owe it to yourself to learn more about this important issue.
Friends of Nevada Wilderness
Did you know Nevada has over 100 areas designated under Federal Wilderness Protection? Friends of Nevada Wilderness has been successful in protecting over 3 million acres of Nevada wildlands under designated wilderness status; such lands are sure to be forever protected for our children to cherish. Getting wilderness designated is the first step toward long-term protection of these special areas, but sadly it is often not enough. Our wild lands need help to heal from past uses and abuses. Check out all of Nevada's wilderness areas here and how you can get involved with protecting our wild and proud Nevada through donations, volunteer work, or even seasonal job opportunities. A great site with great company. Tell Brian I say "Hi"!
Travel Nevada
The Official Website on Nevada Tourism.
If you are a visitor to our state this is a great site to use as a gateway. Also, don't forget to pick up their free road maps and brochures/magazines. These can also be found at most Nevada Chambers of Commerce!
Visit Virginia City
The Official Website for Virginia City.
If you are a visitor to our state, this is a great site to use as a "tourist gateway" for Virginia City. View VC history, watch historic segments, find gunshow times, season festivals, and buy tickets for the V&T Railroad. Can't get enough Virginia City? "Step Back In Time" with this website!
Nevada-History.org
THE #1 SITE ON NEVADA HISTORY. James has compiled an almost overwhelming source of everything regarding Nevada's past. From documented old stories and tales to textbook accurate history, this website comes complete with a Nevada historical timeline and statewide fun facts to wet your whistle. Although he covers the entire state from end to end, this site provides some candid information particularly about Western Nevada and the Gold Canyon towns that is an absolute joy to read, information that many of us didn't know.
Sierra Web
The Official Weblink and Gateway of the Eastern Sierra.
Sierra Web is a great source to various various information if you're new to browsing the area, from fishing reports, area lodging, weather and snow reports, local stories, area news and much more. Also a gateway for other Eastern Sierra based websites.
Mono Lake & the Mono Basin
One of my favorite websites, this is the official website of the Mono Lake Committee, a non-profit group dedicated to protecting Mono Lake and its basin. If you are a student, this website is indispensable. Here, you'll find information about the lake and its history, detailed facts about various area wildlife, birdwatching hotspots, water chemistry, human and natural history, as well as phone numbers and local people to contact! A must see.
Bodie Ghost Town
An unofficial website to Bodie Ghost Town, this is still a fine portal for anything and all Bodie. Bodie.com provides a handful of other Bodie links and insight to some new programs and workshops for photographers, along with the usual history lessons, quirky facts and phone numbers. Happy viewing.
B&H Photo
The source for purchasing my photographic equipment. In my opinion, B&H is the best in the business. Ironically, photography is only one of many departments within their company. B&H is based in New York City and offers both new and used equipment in unbeatable prices. Since I lived on the east coast for a year, I had the privilege of going into their store firsthand. Let's just say about two dozen kids trampling over me still wasn't enough to get me out of there! B&H is the store where the pros go and recommend. Beginners, don't feel left out. Try B&H once and you will fall in love with their fast service and abundance of products. Call it love at first sight!
